View Full Version : Need help resolving Stop 0xC2 BAD_POOL_CALLER
Bart
December 5th 03, 07:05 AM
I recently upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP Home
Edition. It worked fine the first day, but on the second
day, I started getting a Stop 0x000000c2 BAD_POOL_CALLER
every time upon startup. I had to disable the automatic
reboot to actually see the blue screen which had been
flashing by. Thanks to Walter C. for his help.
I followed Walter's advice and disabled the non-MS
services in msconfig->services, and tried to restart, but
it still fails with the same 0xC2 error.
The thing I don't understand is that the parameters I get
in the 0xC2 error don't agree with the MS online
troubleshooting info (knowledge base article 314492, etc.)
The values I get are:
***Stop: 0x000000c2
(0x00000007,0x00000CD4,0x00000000,0xE15A5768)
The troubleshooting info says that the 4th parameter is
always 0 when parameter 1 = 0x00000007, yet I get
0xE15A5768.
Some other info that may be useful.
I looked at the Event Viewer. On the last successful
power up, the first event is:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: EventLog
Event Category: None
Event ID: 6009
Date: 7/21/2003
Time: 4:53:53 AM
User: N/A
Computer: OLGA
Description:
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 5.01. 2600 Service Pack 1
Uniprocessor Free.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
On the first and subsequent power up & boot failures the
first event I get is:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 7/21/2003
Time: 10:58:18 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: OLGA
Description:
DCOM got error "This service cannot be started in Safe
Mode " attempting to start the service EventSystem with
arguments "" in order to run the server:
{1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF}
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This error is followed by a bunch of similar DCOM errors
for other services. I tried following the link in the
message, but nothing is there.
I am not a Windows expert, so I would appreciate some
advice on this one. I tried unplugging my printer and 2
USB devices -- a satellite DSL modem and a SD card reader,
but that didn't help either.
Thanks!

What, if any, Anti-virus, firewall or CD burning application did you have
installed prior to the upgrade?

Thanks, Walter.
Antivirus - The machine is a Gateway 933 MHz Pentium II
purchased new in December 2000. It came with Norton
Antivirus, which I updated in 2001 and 2002. The 2002
Norton update included a firewall, but it caused so many
problems I uninstalled it (it was bundled so I had to get
rid of everything including the AV), got a refund and
switched to McAfee.
I had to uninstall McAfee to install the Direcway (Hughes)
Satellite Broadband, but was able to reinstall it
afterwards without the firewall.
CD Burner: PC came equipped with Adaptec EasyCD Creator
4.? and DirectCD 3. I uninstalled DirectCD since it was
listed in the report of incompatible software that is
generated as part of the ME -> XP upgrade.
Thanks for your help.

I *think* your problem is EZCD. V4 is not officially supported by Roxio. You
have to go a patched version 5 or version 6. The problem now is whether or
not it's possible to uninstall EZCD. However if I recall correctly there may
be an option that requires a bit of surgery on the registry. Go into the
registry at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sha redDlls and
remove all references to EZCD. I think that will get you up in normal mode.
You'll then have to purchase either EZCD 5 or 6 and install it.
The other distinct possibility is McAfee. You can try the above with McAfee
references as well.

Walter,
I was able to uninstall EZCD 4.
I went ahead and contacted MS support last night and we
basically disabled all but the minimum services, and it
still didn't solve the problem.
Then we disabled the hardware devices via the device
manager, and the computer did successfully boot in normal
mode. By turning on the devices one at a time, we found a
problem with the Soundblaster driver, and downloaded a new
driver and installed it.
Anyway, now with all hardware enabled and software
services enabled the computer boots and runs normally.
And since I got rid of EZCD r4, you are right, I'll need
to upgrade that so the CD burner will work.
The tech thinks it was the sound card, but it could have
been something else.
Again, I appreciate you help and advice, which contributed
a lot toward resolving this.
