In looking at MSCONFIG, I see some programs in there that I don't know what
they are. I tried looking at the actual programs but not much help. Does
anyone know what these programs are and if I need them or not:

GWMDMMSG.exe
GWMDMpi.exe
WksSb.exe
WkFud.exe
MHOTKEY.exe
HXIUL.exe
HelpExp.exe

Thanks in advance for any help.

Debbie

None of them are needed. Uncheck them and reboot, if you miss any of that
junk, turn it back on. I would run it from the start button only when I
needed that particular program.

Any of the this look familiar? Note the last two items you listed appear to
be known spyware.

GWMDMMSG.exe & GWMDMpi.exe-GTW Modem Messaging Applet.
WksSb.exe & WkFud.exe-MS Works
MHOTKEY.exe-Enables special keys on Chicony keyboards Only required for
extended features
HXIUL.EXE & HelpExp.exe
Believed to be spyware - made by a company
called Alset . Also known as "HelpExpress". Will install
itself if you have previously had Attune by Aveo installed
as they're by the same company. Uninstall via Add/Remove
programs.....Download, install and run Ad Aware, it might be able to remove
this.

What I would do in your situation is type each item, in turn, into a search
engine and see what results you get.

For example, searching Google (www.google.com) with GWMDMMSG.exe produces
this web page:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_g.htm
which explains that GWMDMMSG.exe is the Gateway Modem Messaging Application.

That's all you have to do. A little time spent on your part is all that's
needed.

Thank you, Jupiter. That website was very helpful and allowed me to
understand exactly what I was removing from startup.
