I am running a optiplex gx270 dell desktop and the computer screen keeps
reverting to a 640x480 screen resolution and the screen gets stuck in that
resolution. The only way to get the screen to revert back to another
resolution is to reboot the computer. Whenever this happens i recieve the
event id that i have attached to this post. I have already uninstalled and
reinstalled the driver. I then switched the video to the onboard video for
a week and the problem seemed to disappear. So i inserted a new video card
and one week after installing the new video card the same thing happen
again. Even though the event log says it is a possible video card driver or
device issue, i have seen posts on the internet that says it is a possible
system board or memory issue. The video card is a ATI 128MB PCI-Express
Radeon X300. Any ideas?

ATI has a very good Uninstall Utility on their website... use it to
completely blitz any previous traces of the drivers before you reinstall.

It's also a possible cooling issue.

Just as a matter of interest, I went through two of those video cards in my
Acer. They replaced it both times, but I bought a different card, this time one
with its own fan instead of merely a heat sink, and have had no more video problems.

I have reinstalled before using the Uninstall Utility. I tried one more
time for good measure, if it happens again, i will look into the overheating
recomendations made by Chuck and Jim.

So far the new drivers seem to be sticking but if i run into the problem
again i will adress the cooling issue. Thanks for the help.
