View Full Version : backup registry/outlook express problems

As usual, trying to deal with a MS problem is like opening
a can of worms. New creatures keep crawling out.

I tried to add a new identity in Outlook Express and ended
up having to do a system restore because I couldn't get
out of the new identity nor could I use it. It kept
asking me for a password that I didn't assign to begin
with and wouldn't accept whatever password was apparently
assigned to it (how could it have a password I never gave
to the new identity, but oh well.)

After I gave up trying to access my main identity,I did
the system restore, so at least I could get my e-mail.
But that still left me without the needed new identity.

So, I called Earthlink and they informed me that this is a
Microsoft problem. Translate that to mean that I have to
pay $35.00 to get answers. Did some searching and learned
that I should just do some work on the registry, but first
had to back it up. Nice. Except that's when I learned
that my version of Win XP somehow is missing the backup
utility. Going as instructed to "System Tools", there is
no "backup" there even though "help" says there should
be. So, I appear to have multiple XP problems. Can't
create multiple identities in Outlook Express and can't
fix the problem because I need to back up the registry
before I mess with it - and I don't have "backup" in my
system. Nor do I feel inclined to pay MS $35.00 to have
them tell me that they surely did send me a faulty bit of
software.

Seems that the first thing I need is "backup", but when I
do a search of downloads, it comes up with zilch. I need
to somehow reinstall that utility but even Microsoft
doesn't know it exists except the "help" files tell me to
use it. How do I install "backup"? Does someone have a
clue? And, what do I do about the inability to create a
new identity, which apparently is a registry problem?
With all the missing data, I'm a little nervous about
making any changes in my system right now but will trust
those who are more knowledgable than me.

Finally, how will I know if anyone responds to my
complaints? Do I get an e-mail notification or
something? Or are the odds good that no one will offer
any help anyhow - as has been my previous experience with
attempts to get online help with problems?

Thanks for trying (if anyone does) It hasn't been a good
day so far.
