Trouble Saving and downloading

I have a home windows xp emachine. I think I have a virus, thus I try to save and download spyware/virus protectors and when the save/run/open file window pops up, it will only pop up for a split second and not let me save anything.This is real annoying,Ive scanned my computer and it just tells me, "get a virus protecter". Ive tried almost everything.....can anyone "please" help me?
