I have a laptop running Windows XP Home, with 4 USB1.1's. I've bought a PCMIA
card with 2 USB2.0's and installed the software that came with it. But every
time I try to use anything plugged into it my laptop freezes. Is there
anything that can be done about this problem and why does it happen? Is there
a KB number that I can download that will rectify it?

Try downloading new drivers from the expansion card manufacturer.

Also check for bios upgrades for your computer. When a computer just
"freezes" when trying to access a device, you usually need to go very
down-level to fix it (not usually a windows-specific problem).

ok. but i dont know what bios or chipset im using and apparently if i try
installing the wrong bios it could totally screw things up couldn't it?
shouldn't really need all that palarva as its a plug and play device. so if
the bios is the problem then its not very plug and play is it?

Did you install the software for the Card before you plugged the card
into the Laptop? Did you install the software for the devices that you are
plugging into the card, before you attached / plugged the device into the
card?

That's true, but it could certianly cause this. Usually you can go to your
PC-maker's web site and type in your serial or model number and it'll tell
you if you need an update.

yes. one of the devices i plugged into the card is a 7in1 card reader and
doesn't have any software, its plug and play.

Question: Can you access the Laptop's Computer BIOS and disable the
Onboard USB Ports, if you are not using them and which may be causing a
conflict and causing the Laptop to freeze?

Also did you reboot the computer after you installed the drivers for the
PCMIA Card? And before plugging the 7in1 Card Reader into the USB Port?

way?

If it is part of the motherboard, no, unless you replaced the
motherboard, that fits your case.

Question: If you removed all the devices that are plugged into the USB
1.1 ports, does the computer still freezed up, before you plug the 7.1 Card
Reader in?

I would try disabling the internal usb through the bios. there might be
a conflict.

Download unless you are already using it, TuneUp Utilities 2006 from http://www.tune-up.com/ and cleaned up the computer with it, after the PCMIA Card is removed from the computer and you uninstall its drivers. Reboot the computer, before running TuneUp.

Once the computer is cleaned up, Disable your Anti-Virus Background Scanning. Reinstall the drivers for the PCMIA Card and reboot the computer. Plug the PCMIA back in, and let Windows reinstall the Card. Reboot the computer. Try plugging in the 7 in 1 Card Reader and see what happens.
