Seems that I have lost all sounds with XP Pro. In the
sounds window I can choose the sounds and play and hear
them but when using Windows there are no sounds. This
may be linked to the latest critical update but can not
say for sure. Any ideas out there?

Startup Sounds are missing:
TweakUI/General/Beep on errors (verify that the box is checked).

System Sounds are missing:
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't
have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double
click (Default) and delete it.
If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.
Hope this helps.
Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.
Or create a system restore point prior to editing.
Note: If the registry key is not there, you can simply create one by going
edit > new.
