Since I have installed Windows Live Messenger, I have been having trouble
with Alerts and Sounds. Most of the time when I get News Alerts all I hear
is a click. While IMing and someone sends me a nudge, I hear nothing. When I
go to Tools\Options\Alerts and Sounds, and try to play the Windows Live
Messenger Events, sometimes it plays, sometimes it doesn't, or I hear a
click. Can anything be done about this?

I have the same problem. As a matter of fact, I did a repair, and still no
alert sounds. I have all the sounds "set" to play in the options page.

Did you notice the "Browse" button on the Alerts and Sounds (options) page?
My browse button is grayed out and not functional.
