This has suddenly appeared this morning with XP Messenger 5.1.0701:


Windows Live(TM) Messenger Service Staff says:

Important service announcement: Because of a recent system update, you must
change the e-mail address that you use to sign in to Windows Live(TM)
Messenger. Until you change your e-mail address, you won't be able to use
Windows Live(TM) Messenger.

To change your e-mail address and find out more about this system update, go
to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/Messenger/en


Surely this is:

a) ******** - I'm not changing my email address
b) weird - that URL isn't even valid

I'd rather not be forced into using Live Messenger, I'm quite happy with the
built-in, adfree, low memory usage, XP one.

A colleague with a 4.x version is not getting signed in, but *isn't* seeing
the message, and another person with a slightly earlier 5.1 version is
signed in fine.

Using Windows Live Messenger *does* work though.

Hi Doehead,

Thanks for raising this problem, I have exactly the same problem with
Windows Messenger 4.7.3001 (XP Home Edition SP2). Sorry I don't have a
solution, yet, but hopefully someone from Microsoft can solve it !! Please !!

I also get the same message with the same invalid URL. Do you also use MSN
with a @yahoo.com-address? I think the error is because of the recent support
to speak with Yahoo-contacts in MSN. I would really like to know how I can
change my address without having to register a new account and force all my
contacts to add me again.

Yes, in my case it is an @yahoo.com address. Interesting. And annoying if
that's the case. I have no wish to change address (or register a hotmail
one). And MS are not having my real address either...

Interesting. My address is a yahoo.com address as well. It seems that
Microsoft would have contacted us via email first about a change if this were
legitimate.

Mine is a @btinternet.com address (however BT and Yahoo are partnered for
Internet access services). Not sure what this signifies, but it sure seems an
idiotic way for Microsoft to update the Messenger service.

I have a @yahoo.com address. Same problem, not even a valid URL/link.

mine also is a @yahoo.com... I did try to sign up for a hotmail "junk"
account... in order that I could use messenger... it still has not allowed me
to use messenger.. even though it seems as though I'm signed in as normal....
as if this IP has been locked out now er something.... not sure...

It is legit, but I've yet to hear back from Redmond as to why this is happening or what the
plan is.

All seems fine again as of this morning. Let's just hope somebody flicked
the wrong switch and leave it at that...
