View Full Version : Modifying the registry

I am 4 days into a new ccomputer with XP, and I have not
been able to use SpellChecker in Outlook Express emails
because I have Office 97 loaded and the spellchecker in
Word in this older version does not support the OLE ver
6. I called Dell because they supplied this new laptop,
and the tech guy directed me to Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 224176. He indicated that a
correction/modification of The Registry would correct the
problem. (He said something about the spellchecker
not "Looking at the right destination to work with Word
97." I am not a techie, and I do not know what he truly
meant.) The tech guy made it clear - as does the Base
Knowledge article itself - that it is a BIG deal to enter
The Registry, but the steps are few (6) and if followed
to the letter, would produce the desired results and no
problems. But Dell technicians are not authorized to
help edit someone's registry, so I was off on my own to
see if I could do it.

The reason for the post is that I followed the steps
EXACTLY, but the result did not match the description, so
I stopped before making any modifications. I was hoping
that someone could confirm that my assumptions here are
correct.

The directions for correcting the SpellChecker problem
are:
1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedt32, and then click
OK.
2. Double-click to expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder,
expand the Software folder, and then expand the Microsoft
folder.
3. Double-click to expand the Shared Tools folder, and
then click the SharedFilesDir value.
4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
5. Type C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\
in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

Things go fine for Steps 1 and 2. At step three, if you
EXPAND the Shared Tools folder you will not
see "SharedFilesDir" below. That is because a file by
that name rests directly in Shared Tools file. There was
no need to EXPAND the file, just click on the file name
to find SharedFilesDir.

I assume that is the right place to enter and modify the
Registry. But becasue I know NOTHING about this, I
thought I would see if anyone could throw some light on
my question.

Thanks,
David

That's not correct. The spellchecker in Word 97 and even in Word
95, both work fine with Outlook Express 6.

Got to http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm This will
likely solve your problem.
