xp problems

My dad has a new PC, (3 moths old). He's not very comp
literate and hasn,t checked for or downloaded any updates.
Whole system is running at snails pace, most applications
hang, can't access network connections in control panel
to check if firewall enabled and when try to install
updates get disconnected due to idling.
Also, when pc freezes, have to switch off on CPU as
windows nonresponsive.

Lots of problems any help greatly appreciated.

Do a defrag, then do the updates. That should help to some extent.
