unable to restore or unrestore

I have Windows XP that came with my computer.Yesterday my
husband tried to load a computer dame, Delta Force Black
Hawk Down, which he has played many times before. He
received an error message saying that the game "has
encountered a problem and needs to close". After many
attempts to uninstall and then reinstall the game, with
no success, we tried to restore to a previous date. The
computer went ahead and closed down, but when Windows
came back on the screen it had another error
message: "Incomplete restoration: cannot restore to
such and such date..". So we tried another date, etc,
etc. I have tried everything I can think of. I have
restored in Safe mode, and I have tried to unrestore to a
previous restore. the same error message comes every
time. I have typed in CMD in the command prompt and it
says everything is working fine. We would certainly
appreciate any help anyone has to offer!
