I have a Compaq Presario laptop. I installed Windows Media Player 10 and only
got audio. I removed it and installed M P 11 with same results. I can play a
DVD, Cd or view videos from web sites. I also installed update to my video
card. My neice is having the same problem on her desktop. Any help would be
appreciated.

Both of you apparently have to reinstall your DVD decoding software... it's
usually PowerDVD or WinDVD, whichever came with your PC. Check your manual
as to the correct instructions for reinstalling an individual application.

I installed an updated version of WinDVD and still no video. The only video I
can get is on Quicktime.

There is no error message. Just does not show video, audio is fine, but no
video in MWP or WinDVD or on web sites. All I get is a black screen.

The cd has both AVI and MPG, both play fine on my desktop which has Windows
98SE and has WMP 2. I have not tried to play it on my laptop, but have been
able to watch videos from web sites until a couple of days ago. I have tried
to restore to a prior date at least six times, but it will not restore. My
desktop is not hooked up to the internet. My laptop is hooked up via a
wireless router.

AVI files need the correct codec to play... usually DivX (www.divx.com) but
sometimes XviD as well (www.xvidmovies.com). The correct way to identify
which you need is to download and install G-Spot Codec Identifier and ask it
to render the files.
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
You should also have the latest graphics driver for your notebook (from your
notebook manufacturer's website) and the latest DirectX
(www.microsoft.com/directx)

I had already updated driver and Direct X. I installed G-Spot and it loaded
51 video codecs. I now get an error -
The file you are attempting to play has an extention that does not match the
file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior. -

Sounds like you have disabled "Video Overlay" or turned the hardware
acceleration up too high.

Hello Bill, You are not alone - having this problem!
On my hard drive I have a number of video clips, which I have downloaded
from the Internet.
The video clip files have no extensions to them, but I know that they are
AVI and/or DivX type of files.
When trying to play the files with Windows Media Player 11, the only visual
effect I can get is a hysterical dance of graphics, which I believe is a
representation of the playback of the acoustic recording.
The recorded video pictures are impossible to get on to the screen.
Do I need to convert the (compressed?) files to something, which Windows
Media Player can handle? If so, please inform me about what software I need
and – if possible – recommend one (or more) that is good.
The advice from NoNoBadDog:
"Sounds like you have disabled "Video Overlay" or turned the hardware
acceleration up too high."
....'cannot' be aplicable to me as my computer is only two months old - and I
have not changed anything.

I too am having this problem.
Specifics are:
MP3 files wil not display video
Audio part playes to end and loops OK.
A single frame of the video comes up aftet the playback restarts the 2nd loop.
If you double click the file name in the play list, the playback restarts
from the beginning and both audio and video work fine, even in the next
loops???
If I restart the player, by ckicking on the link in the source WEB page, the
audio and video play OK??? (something got remembered!!!)
If I do a properties on the non playing MP3 in the play list, the leingth is
reportrd as "00:00" ???
Afrer double clicking on it and geting the video to play, the property
reports a correct leingth???

MP3 files are not video files.

Maybe you have MPEG files? Converting
them to a different video format (.wmv or .avi)
may be your solution.
Have a look at the following article:
Movie Maker 2 - Importing MPEG Files
