View Full Version : Domain log on problem

I just changed the network id on my IBM T22 Laptop running
xp and now I can not log on. Here is what I did.

.. right clicked My Computer
.. selected properties
.. clicked on Network ID in the Computer Name tab
.. clicked on "This is for Home use and not part of a
business network (this maybe a problem because my pc is
has a domain for work too).
.. Clicked Finish and rebooted.

Upon boot up, I need to do a cntl/alt/delete to get to the
log on screen. The log on screen prefills my user name
and when I enter my password, xp returns the standard
error message: The system can not log on. Please check
the domain and user name and password (or something like
this message).

My company has a domain name that is need when logging
into its network however I think by selecting the home use
option, I caused a conflict. My understanding is that xp
assigns "Workgroup" to the domain when selecting home
use. So I tried logging with a user name
of "Workgroup\username (I used the actual user name of my
laptop) with my password and it still gave me the log in
error message.

The other odd thing about this is that when I select the
Options button on the login screen it just redisplays the
login screen the "shut down" button added. Pressing the
Options button again, displays the login screen without
the "Shutdown" button. The traditional screen where one
can change the domain is displayed below
the "OK", "Shutdown" and "Options" buttons does not
appear.

Any advice on how to resolve this issue would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks

You are correct that you sort of shot yourself in the foot.

Tricky situation since I've not been around domains with a luggable myself
as a member of a domain. Your best option though, since no one outside of
your domain admin knows what policies have been pushed down, is to contact
the IT staff where you work. To correct the situation will require an admin
log on and depending on how tightly they've locked things down, only they
may be able to correct the problem.

Greetings --

Physically reconnect to the domain network, log into the PC with
the local Administrator's account, and use an account with domain
admin privileges to add the workstation back into the domain.

Alternatively, log into the PC with the local Administrator's
account and create a local account for your use.

Thanks for the response. I have admin rights so I will
connect in the office and see if I can hack my way through
it.
