When running MSDOS commands in Command Prompt window and
the window is maximized, the screen freezes. This is
specific to a couple of machines running XP Prof - others
work fine. The 16bit program such as Edit runs in a window
but hangs on full screen. - Any ideas ?

Video drivers? You might want to install the newest video drivers.

Start | Run | Cmd.exe.
Then press Alt+Enter. It should go to full screen.
