View Full Version : Backup my hard drive

I'm wanting to backup my hard drive. According to the FAQ's
published my Microsoft, I get to system tools and select
Performance and Mainteance and then a list of steps to
backup a hard drive. The mainteance portion is not listed.
I'am I correct in assuming Gates had this feature removed
so that 1) he does not want the little guy to backup his
hard drive & 2) he can collect the $35 for online support?
Does anyone know of a way that I can backup my hard drive?
Thanks

You can do a backup using the free backup program provided with XP,
but it isn't installed by default.
Go to start/all progs/accessories/system tools and see if backup is
listed there. Alternatively, look for ntbackup.exe in your system32
folder. If it is there, run it, and do an ASR backup (Automated
System Recovery) then a data backup. If it's not there, install it
from your XP CD.
Or you can buy an image backup program like Norton Ghost 2003 or Drive
Image 7 - both work well, although I trust Ghost more as it works from
DOS with no open system files - and both let you restore individual
files and folders as well as a full restore.

I have a similar problem. I can't figure out how to
backup my Compaq Presario running WinXP home, to a CD. I
don't have NTBackup on my hard drive. I can't locate
NTback on by system recovery disks that I made when I
first booted up the system (they seem to be locked or
something). Bottom line, how do I backup my complete
system to a CD?
Thanks,
