"CD/DVD not found"

After installing the most recent set of updates, my
computer has gone batty-- including a screen when i
rebooted claiming:
"CD/DVD not found. please consult your troubleshooting
manual"

now, neither my DVD drive nor my CD drive works or is
detected at all by my computer once XP boots up.
how can i restore these drives?
