When I use disk defragmenter on my system drive, it runs fine but in the end
displays incorrect report. The report says:
'Defragmenter is complete for C:
Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.'
when I check the report, it does not contain any file details. No matter how
many times I do it, I receive the same message and this has been happening
over the last few days, it never happened before. Previously either I would
receive the details of unfragmented files in the report or I would just
receive a message that defrag is complete for C. My C is NTFS and contain XP
from the beginning. I wonder what has caused this changed behavior on my pc
and how could it be corrected.

How full is your hard disk? Are there any large files you could delete?

The defrag program needs space to place files temporarily while it defrags
them.

It is almost 40% empty, and only contains windows and those programs which
do not offer 'install to directory' option. Nothing 'big' as such.

What happens if you boot into Safe mode and defragment from there?

Thank you Greg for responding,
It does the same in safe mode too. Could you help?
