I am trying to install an HP color LaserJet 2550 printer on my new Dell
Inspiron E1505 laptop with Windows XP. I am installing from the installation
CD that came with the printer. I had no problem installing the same printer
on my old computer a year ago.

Now however I get the following error mesage:

Cannot install hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: hp
color LaserJet 2550 series. An error occurred during installation of the
device. There is no driver selected for the device information set or
element.

I have tried installing numerous times and keep getting the same message.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you using the XP version of your printer driver?

Did you install the software before connecting the printer?

Not sure what that means. I am using the installation CD that came in the
box with the HP printer.

If you want the printer to work with Windows XP, you need to use a
Windows XP-compatible driver. Check the documentation that came with the
CD to see if it is Windows XP-compatible. If not, you may be able to
dowbload the proper driver from HP's website.

I just checked documentation on the CD and it lists Windows XP among the
printer drivers included on the CD-ROM.

No. The printer must be connected and powered on, in order to run the
installation according to the Hardware Install Wizard. The new hardware
wizard is correctly identifying the hardware, but then it won't install the
software.

It's been awhile since I last installed an HP printer, but
If I remember correctly, you put the CD in the drive, and it
prompts you to make the connection and turn the printer ON.
Then it completes the installation. If you connect the
printer, the sequence is doesn't start.

Use the device manager to clear the printer and the USB
ports, then start with the CD and don't connect the printer
until told to do so by the software.

it is 138 mm (5.43 inches) high.

Figure 4: Required space

NOTE: When preparing a location for the HP
color LaserJet 2550L printer, make sure that the surface on
which the printer is being placed is larger than the bottom
of the printer. No portion of the printer base should extend
past the surface on which it rests.

If an optional 250-sheet tray (Tray 2) or an
optional 500-sheet tray (Tray 3) have been purchased, see
the documentation that was provided with the tray in order
to install it.

Figure 5: Optional components

Regulate the environment
Do not place the printer in direct sunlight or

the sealing tape completely.

CAUTION: Do not touch the surface of the
roller, or print-quality issues can occur.

CAUTION: If toner gets on clothing, wipe the
toner off with a clean cloth, wash the items in cold water,
and then air dry the items. Using hot water or heat from a
dryer will set the toner in the fabric.

5.. Squeeze the blue release levers on the
print cartridge, holding it with the roller facing the front
of the printer. Lower the cartridge straight down into the
carousel until it is firmly in place.

Figure 21: Inserting print cartridge

6.. Close the top cover. When the green Go
light begins blinking, press (ROTATE CAROUSEL). Repeat this
process to install the other three print cartridges.

The problem is that the HP install disc cannot locate the printer. It now
just goes into an endless search and never comes out of it.

You let the CD run and follow the directions for USB installs. It normally
would ask for you to connect the USB cable to the printer.
