View Full Version : System Restore fails to restore any point

Hi everyone,
I am running XP pro. I was trying to setup a network
with my desktop but couldn't get it to work. However, I
made some changes on my laptop during this time. When I
went back to restore at an earlier time the system
restore failed. I have tried several dates but still the
same problem. I even tried the safe mode. From what I
can tell, it starts the restore process but only gets
about 40% of the way through when it goes into reboot
mode. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve;
There is most likely corrupted data in the system Restore files.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.

Hi Steve:
Couple things to check:
Are the system restore required services and task scheduler running? The
System Restore service and Windows Management Instrumentation service both
need to be running. Also the task scheduler needs to be running.
Have you had any unexpected shutdowns or loss of power which may have
corrupted a restore point and any previous? If so, points created at that
time and previous to it will not be restoreable.
If you've verified the required services and task scheduler are running and
you havent had an abrupt shutdown, It would great if you could repro the
issue by failing a restore and running SRDiag immediately after and sending
us the CAB file to so we can have a look.
Step by step to check the services/task scheduler and run SRDiag:
1. To verify that System Restore service is running from Control Panel:
Click Start, Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools, Computer Management, then Services and
Applications.
Click Services, and then click System Restore Services. Ensure the service
is set to Automatic and the status is Started
2. To verify that Windows Management Instrumentation Service is running
from Control Panel: Click Start, Control Panel, then Performance and
Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools, Computer Management, then expand Services and
Applications.
Click Services (not WMI Control), and then click Windows Management
Instrumentation (be sure you select this service and not the WMI driver
extensions). Ensure the service is set to Automatic and the status is
Started
3. To verify that Task Scheduler is running from Control Panel:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click "Performance and
Maintenance".
Click Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, and then click
Services and Applications.
Click Services, then Task Scheduler service to ensure the Service is set to
Automatic and the status is Started
4. Final Step (run SRDiag to create and then send a .cab file of System
Restore logs to )
Generate a .cab file after a restore fails, which contains the System
Restore log files of what system changes were tracked and restored vs which
were not to help troubleshoot the cause of the restore fail. No personal
data is transported. To generate a system restore Cab file:
Click Start, then Run
Type or paste: %windir%\system32\restore\srdiag.exe and click OK
A command window will open while the Srdiag.exe runs. The command session
will automatically close when complete, and the .cab file will be created in
your Windows\system32\restore directory. This can take several minutes.
To send the .cab file containing change and restore logs to a monitored
Microsoft alias: Send an email directly with your cab attached to
.
