The Diskcleanup stops responding when activated. After
following instructions from "Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article" - 812930, I deleted the Registry key for
compress old files, which then removes that option from
the Disc Cleanup. This enabled the cleanup utility to
finish the task. Is there a way to fix this problem so
the Disc Cleanup is fully operational and the "compress
old files" option works. I have tried to import the same
registry file from another computer where the Disc
Cleanup compress old files works. This did not make a
differnece from the previous state. Any help much
appreciated

There is no known cause of this. So there is no known fix. All that is =
known is that it happens to a few machines. It would require someone =
with the problem to track it down and it only happens to a few machines =
- so people who can track it down don't have the problem.

I've often wondered for those with the prob if statistal analysis can be =
done on their machines what would turn up. EG, All running a particular =
program or driver, all with at least x number of files, or something =
like that.

One thing you could try is to get filemon from www.sysinternals.com and =
see where it stalls at and what, if anything, is different about that =
file from other files.

To restore the minimun registry entries for Compress to run type =
regsvr32 dataclen (though this won't stop it hanging - many people have =
waited days for it to finish).

It's very unlikely to be a registry setting issue.

Another thing you could try is API Monitor from the XP CD. This lists =
API calls made by a program. It may be hanging in an API call. This may =
show the function that hangs (the last one) and may give a clue. It's =
part of Support Tools but needs to be installed seperately.

One other thing is oh program from the Win 2003 Resource Kit tools. This =
will list all objects that are open. This may give further clues. =

This just happened on mine and truthfully I did not
expect to find my issue but there is more of us that
think it is our own fault thus It does not get reported
What do you think??
