I recently had a disk shuffle round and since then I can't get System
Restore to run at all. From either Start/Programs/etc... or right
click My Computer I just get the "encountered a problem" message. The
technical information has the
following at the top:

Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x000000005c0295ba

Therefore I am not able to disable and re-enable System Restore to
clear the restore points.

Before: 13Gb single partition C(system), 40Gb partitioned to F and G
After: 40Gb partitioned to C(system) and F, 80Gb single partition G

I used Drive Image 2000 to move the operating system from old disk to
the new.

Any ideas anyone? Otherwise the system runs OK.

Thanks in advance.

Doug:
You might want to run Error Checking with repair, and see if that can find
and fix the corrupted files.
I hope this helps.

Hi doug- System Restore identifies restore points by unique drive guids.
The new drive has a guid which is out of synch with your restore points from
the old drive. System Restore but I dont know why that would impact your
ability to disable and re-enable the feature so the guids are assigned per
your new drive. You may need to do a repair install or run sr.inf

In another thread on System Restore, David Harris hinted at a solution
which involved cycling the System Restore service. I tried just
stopping and re-starting the service but this made no difference.

However I was able to resolve the problem with the following
procedure:

- Change the System Restore service startup method to Manual
- Re-boot the machine
- Right click on My Computer, select Properties and then the System
Restore tab
- A message box warns that System Restore is not running. Clicking
OK starts the System Restore service and sets startup method back to
Automatic
- The System Restore setting are accessible again, with all drives
disabled.

I guess that this results in all the restore points being lost, but
this was not an issue for me. I simply wanted to get System Restore
working again and this seemed to do the trick for me.

Thanks to all who replied with advice.
