I wiped and formatted the hard drive. I reinstalled
windows xp home edition (v-2002). now after working for
about 15 minutes a message appears on desktop stating
system shutdown. the reason stated is that remote
procedures call (rpc) and something about nt
authority/system. I checked the error log and found the
repeatative entries:

Source: service control manager
(the remote procedures call (rpc) service terminated
unexpextedly); and

Source: Even syste m
(the com+ event system detected a bad return code during
internal processing. HRESULT was 800706BA from line 44 of
d:\nt\com\comlx\svc\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cp p

How can i fix this?

Were you on the Internet at the time?

Sounds like the W32.Blast.Worm.

Go to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ and run the Free Online Virus and
Security Check.

There are removal tools at the site for any worms or viruses found.

Be sure your firewall is enabled so you don't get it again.
