View Full Version : Cant install SP1 - say I have incompatible OS!

I am running Windows XP Pro. I cannot install the SP1.
I have downloaded the network install so I have the whole
WinXP SP1 install file and it will not install. I have
tried doing the Express Windows XP SP1 install from the
Windows Update site and get the same result. The install
starts, extracts the install files, then I think at the
point where the "real" install would start to happen, I
get a dialog box saying:
Windows XP SP1 is incompatible with this version of
Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft.
So, here I am. What's going on and what can I do to get
this to work right?
P.S. I have called Microsoft Customer Service and they
have confirmed by my product ID that I truely am using
Windows XP Pro. If it makes a difference this was
installed from an MSDN Universal Subscription. The
subscription is now expired, but I still need this
machine to work right. Thanks!

Go to Run > Start and type: WINVER , and hit enter.
If "Version 5.1 (Build 2600) is not shown, you are running a
beta version of XP for which there is no update support. If
that's the case, you need to reformat your drive and install
the released version of XP, after purchasing it.
Also, make sure to download the "32-bit" version, and not
the "64-bit" version, of SP1.

I do have the Final Version, not beta, etc... I have also
made the point of getting the correct SP1. Remember I
have done this through Windows Update as well, which
would detect if I were using 64bit. I have used the same
DVD (I have MSDN)to install on other machines, and this
is the only one doing this.
