truncated location names problem

For some reason XP seems to truncate the location name,
in the title bars
(along the top) of Explorer and Internet Explorer. I've
reinstalled several
times and all seems to go ok until I'm almost 90% done.
Then BAM, the title
bars only display the first character of the location.
It's never the same
program installation that triggers the problem. The
frustration became too
much today, after purchasing a new XP Athlon 2 ghz cpu
and motherboard to
rebuild the PC. And it happened AGAIN!!!!
There's got to be a way to simply reset this variable.
Can anyone help????
