Hard drive getting used up!

In Jan. 2003 I bought a new computer with XP. Up until
Aug. 1, I had only 5gb used out of my 40gb avail. In the
last 2 weeks it ate up 38gb without my loading any new
programs. I compressed all files and was left with 30gb
avail. Since Sept. 1 it has used 22gb. I have updated
Mccafee on a weekly basis and ran it daily with no
viruses. Can someone tell me whats happening please?

Do y9ou have the indexing service active? From a Run box, launch
SERVICES.MSC, go down to "Indexing Service," and make sure it is set either
to Manual or Disabled, not Automatic.
