MINI-DV to DV-ISA to MPEG-2 to DVD to TV

Hi All,
The subject is my goal.
I wsa able to hook up my camera to the firewire port and import my MINI-DV
onto my system in DV-ISA format, using the HQ option. One file is 8GB, the
other is 3GB. I can play the video in Windows Media Player and ATI Media
Player without any issues. Now I want to create DVDs to send to relatives who
do not have computers, who have standard DVD players and televisions.

Using the usual conversion tools I am able to convert the video portion
without any problems. The audio portion is like fast-forward chipmunk speak.

I have used AVSMEDIA products which claims that it can, it isn't, and I am
not getting a response from their support. Before I spend another $25 for the
NERO DVD-Video plug-in for my Nero burning suite with Nero Vision Express,
which claims it can do it, I wanted to know if anyone else has had such
issues and if and how they were resolved.

Someone mentioned Adobe Media Encoder (Encore) or MainConcept MPEG2 Encoder
1.5.1, but both are non affordable for my one-time amatuer production, not
even knowing if they would actually do the job.

I would appreciate any feedback.

explicitly state that it could covert DV-AVI to MPEG-2. Does anyone have
details, before I blow another $25 on the Nero Plug-In? They state that it
isn't part of any of their retail products.

What capture software are you using?
How do you transfer to PC? - Firewire?
And what exactly is DV-ISA?
Mini-DV footage is recorded as DV-AVI,
if captured via firewire, all capture software
will recognise it, including freeware WMM and STOIK.
All burning software can import DV-AVI footage
and convert/burn to disk as mpeg2 vobs.
I use nero, it has no problem with DV-AVI footage.
I would hazard a guess you are using capture software
that converts on-the-fly to whatever that format is?

Erm, you seem to be using a superflous extra step here.... capture and edit
in DV-AVI then burn the completed file straight to DVD.... easily done with
Nero, Roxio, WinDVD Creator, PowerDirector... almost any of them.

Hi,
I use movie maker to import it into the system via firewire. Nero says it is
too large to burn as movie dvd, to use udp, which creates a useless dvd which
doesn't work anywhere. that i should convert it to mpeg2 before I can burn a
dvd to use on my dvd player. the mpeg2 was still too large for nero stating
it can't be larger then 2gb. Sorry, was supposed to be DV-AVI. I saved the
movie to disc from movie maker in DV-AVI NTSC and used avsmedia film editor
to burn a DVD. It works on the TV DVD player, but won't work on the computer
where I burnt it. it skips and stalls. movie maker didn't have an option to
save as simple dv-avi. I have two or three different formats to burn to dvd
and selected the highest quality. My other video is 8gb and I have to burn to
dual layer a $5 a shot, already wasted one, so won't try that one until I get
the 4gb movie burnt properly. Yes, I'm a beginner and I do not want to make
this a profession or hobby... I have been working with PC's since the early
80's though, so it's not like I'm without computer skills.... Thanks for any
advice.

Nero said it was too large (over 2gb) and to burn using udp format instead. I
ended up with a useless disk.
I imported, then saved it to dv-avi ntsc using movie maker. then used
avsmedia file editor to create a dvd using the hq setting. It works on the
tv, but not on the computer. I read elsewhere that the dv-AVI had to be
converted to mpeg2 before it can be burnt to a dvd to view on tv and on
computer. too many problems and too many different opinions. I'm close but
not there. after 3 long nights I'm tired of it because they take so long to
process. Thanks for any advice.

Hi
There is something amiss here. Authoring/burning software
is configured so as to "know" the file size of a DV-AVI is not
pertinant, as during transcoding it will be a fraction of the
original file size when burned to DVD as mpeg2.
Your 8gb DV-AVI equates to less than 45 mins and/or
less than 2gb as a DVD compliant mpeg.

The DVD standard will only accommadate individual
file sizes upto 2gb, so *ALL* authoring/Burning software
will devide large files into 1.2gb files, there are no
discernable "joins" on playback.

Nero most definately would not reject a DV-AVI.
Your DV camcorders DV-AVI footage captured via firewire
by WMM is most definately compliant with ALL DVD
authoring/burning software.
MS were mainstay in the set up of the DV-AVI standard.
And as you captured via WMM, by default it will be type 1
and therefore WMM most definately has the option to
save as DV-AVI, and the footage will be compatible with
all authoring software.
Try this:
Connect your DV cam via firewire, power up in vcr mode.
You should see onscreen the prompt with options etc.
Select WMM, if not shown as an option, close that window,
GoTo Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/WMM
Under 1) Capture Video is option: "Capture from Video Device"
Click that and a dialog will appear;
1) Your DV cam should be listed, click next button...
2) You now get options to give the captured footage a name
and a folder to save to. Click the Next button
3) The Video setting dialog, this will have 3 options
by default the third option is preselected and that is
the option you want: "DV-AVI (NTSC)
4) Click the Next button, follow the prompts and your
DV footage will be saved to HD as DV-AVI.
5) When capture is complete, close WMM
6) Open Nero, select to make a "DVD-Video"
import the DV-AVI footage and burn.

You are doing something wrong along the line?

Just some ideas.....

How long is your movie? Did you
know 1 hour is the limit on a 4.7GB
DVD? Dual layer would be 2 hours.
(some programs will offer to fit the
file to the available space by using
compression...this results in a longer
but lower quality video)

2g is not too large, an hour in DV-AVI is about 12gb. Try WinDVD Creator
(www.intervideo.com or PowerDirector (www.gocyberlink.com)

Thanks again for your response. I got to step 6 and did exactly what you
advise, clicked on create dvd movie. I then added my dv-avi using the wizard,
and it told me that it couldn't burn it because it was over 2gb, that I would
need to burn using UDP format and that's when I started having problems.

That is when I started fishing around and found that Nero had to have a
mpeg2 conversion plug-in installed, which is sold separately for $25, along
with Nerovision, which I have but did not have installed. It's already a
headache trying to keep apple and ati media players away from my video files,
even when I set the properties for them to leave them alone... I need ATI as
my dvd player and my wife needs apple for itunes, otherwise I wouldn't have
either installed. Microsoft needs to pull some muscle and get all of the
encoders/decoders included/embedded in the operating system along with a
decent burning utility. All I wanted from Nero was the burning rom utility,
none of the other 'stuff'.....

Do you think that if I went ahead and did a full install of Nero and
purchase their mpeg2 conversion plugin, that I would be all set to go?

An MPEG2 decoder should be anything that enables you to play a DVD on your
PC..... WinDVD and PowerDVD being the two most common and bundled with a new
PC.

Is this a lite version of Nero?

Ah, from your description you have a *free* trial version of
Nero? Probably preinstalled on your PC when purchased?
As for MS pulling muscle, there is an awful lot of free muscle
already included in XP. The restricted version of Nero you
have was bundled by the OEM/Vendor.
I personally recommend you invest in full burning software,
Nero is excellent, and you are halfway there with the trial
version, just add the plug-in. Or you could opt for Roxio.
But you can try freeware and see if that will produce MPEG2
files that are compatible with your trialware Nero.

Thanks again for your reponse. I had the Nero version that came with the DVD
burner, but had only installed the burning portion since I already had too
many players and picture managers installed. Nero still gave me the option to
burn a video dvd, but did not have the Nerovision installed to support it. I
installed it and now I can create the DVD the way I wanted. The Plug-In is
included. I also installed the latest divx, vidx and other encoders referred
to by Nero.

There is still one major problem and I'm sure someone here knows the answer.
One of the videos had a 4 minute sequence where it was accidently filmed
sideways. I was able to divvy the AVI up in Windows Movie Maker and apply the
270 degree rotation effect to the portion which was sideways. In WMM it plays
properly without any issues. When I go to save the movie to DV-AVI(NTSC) WMM
bombs and the AVI is corrupted. I cut out the sideways portion and saved it
as an individual movie, converted it using the rotation effect and save it as
a mpeg2 formatted file. I re-opened my original project and imported the new
mpeg2 file to it, wanting to replace the originial sideways portion with it.
the mpeg2 import plays sound within WMM, but no picture. Again, WMM bombs
when I try to save the movie with the mpeg2 included.

Is there a way around this?

This product will most likely read your DV-AVI file and write a
burnable DVD structure for you.

There is an old free, beta version of this product floating about on
the web which will probably also work for a one shot deal. Look for
VSO DivxToDVD, there may be one here:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=vso_DivXtoDVD. The user has no
control over the process in the beta version, but it does the trick -
and I've never used the commercial version, so can not comment except
that it is probably better.

I'm just guessing but it sounds like you created
a simple Data DVD. And your DVD Player is
apparently compatible with .MP3 and JPEG...
this means you could burn....MP3s and JPEGs
on a DVD or a CD and the player would play
them.

You need DVD authoring software to create a
Video DVD. Some examples would be...Nero,
Roxio, ULead, WinDVD Creator, Sonic, ProShow
Gold...etc.....
