Thank you, Rich. Your suggestion led me in the right
direction. I already have Lavasoft and frequently apply
it. I did it once again but it did not resolve
the "winnet" issue. But, the comments -- however brief
and cryptic -- on the page you suggested stimulated me to
search further for "winnet" files. I eventually found
that rogue application in the Program files under "common
name". There too was comwiz.exe also referred to at
http://www.experts-
exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20718300.html
which sent me also to the helpful
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/CommonName.html.
Removing "winnet" and "common name" was tricky. It
cannot simply be sent to the Recycle bin, nor does it
appear in the XP "Remove/Add Programs" menu. You have to
find the "uninstall" file in the "common name" folder and
follow those instructions. In the end, I no longer have
that bothersome error message when logging off or turning
