Windows XP performance

On Sunday August 31st I installed Windows XP on my
Hewlett Packard Pavillion computer. Almost immediately a
pop up window began appearing and saying:

This system is shutting down. Please save all
work in progress. Any unsaved work will be lost. Shut
down initiated by NT Authority\System.

message
Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure
Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.


What is going on? Is it my computer, or the Windows XP?
This one is a new one on me!
