When I download SP1 from the MS site and try to insatll it, I get an error
message that says my product code is invalid and to "contact sys admin" (I
have a single machine). My product code has always worked in the past. I did
have to recently (1 months ago) reinstall XP because I crashed my machine.
Any advice?

A list of license numbers known to be in use with pirated/illegitimate
copies of Windows XP were invalidated when SP1 was released. Presumably the
number that you are using is one of those on that list.
If you believe that your license number is entirely legal and valid for use
with your machine and your copy of Windows XP then I can only suggest
contacting Microsoft support directly.

Does the error look like this
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/images/SP1_setup_error.jpg ?
If so you very likely have a version of Windows XP Pro installed with an
illegal product key.
If you use this app to uncover your current key
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/keyfinder.exe and the key begins with FCKGW
then it is definitely a pirated key.
To fix this problem you will need to purchase a legitimate version of
Windows XP Pro (not Home) and use the app from the download link above to go
to Options "Change key". Next change the product key to the legitimate
version.
You will then be able to install SP1.
Additional information on changing the Product Key is found here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;321636
If you purchased your system with XP Preinstalled you should contact your
vender and inform them of the problem. They should give you a legitimate
key. If they refuse you can report them to Microsoft's Anti-Piracy Team.
Contact information is on the error message.

Contact Microsoft if you have a valid copy with proof. Some legal copies do
get blacklisted.

Try to remember if you have previously installed some 3rd party =
programs.....
If you have XP-Antispy , remove it.
=20
Also, go to Start - Run and type
regsvr32 licdll.dll <enter>
regsvr32 regwizc.dll <enter>
Also if you have any program that changes the splash screen, or
provides more styles by modifying the system files (especially =
Styles-XP), uninstall it.
Later on, look for an update from Tgtsoft at =
http://www.tgtsoft.com/download.asp
Another to watch is ThemeXP from http://www.themexp.org. Uninstall & =
only use it if fully XP-compliant.
Then close all your open user programs & disable antivirus, then you can =
proceed to SP1.
