"Found new hardware" message for software items?

Recently XP has been giving the "found new hardware" message for software
items previously installed on the computer. Spyware Doctor and Windows
Defender, as well as a "spyware kernel", now get this treatment on starting
WinXP. Cancelling the little window works fine, but this doesn't happen on
our destop PC and I'd just as soon stop it on the laptop. Anyone else had
this issue?
