For the last couple of days now, my computer (1.7
ghz..256 RAM) has been running like its mired in a sea of
peanut butter. For some reason, i cant do anything to get
the task manager to come up...ie run it manually, click
the icon..etc...and i feel like someone's gotten
something really nasty into my computer. WHAT DO I DO???
i've virus-scanned and all that..but i cant find a thing!

Alex;
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

Microsoft Hotfix Q811493 is another possible cause of this
problem. Microsoft Knowledge Base article 819634 talks
about this. If you Google the Hotfix number you'll find
all sorts of additional information about it.

Kristofer;
Not very likely.
That issue was resolved about 3 months ago.
There has been a new 811493 available as of that time.
Since this issue is only a few days old, 811493 is not the cause.

the Google information you saw must have been outdated.
