multimedia audio and video controller

I did a clean install of win xp..have all the updates thru SP 2..

My speakers are hooked up correctly, but i cannot get it to configure
correctly, as i cannot get the sound to work.
i have tried to remove them under device mgr and then 'add new hardware' but
it gives me the msg..could not update??? i know there is a hardware
problem, but do not know how to solve it..

please advise how to get the computer's sound working again...

First of all .. What kind of audio card or is it an on board one? .. you can
try this ... in add and remove programs.. uninstall all sound card related
items ... in device manager right click on the sound device and choose
uninstall... if it doesn't ask you to reboot then click on the "action" menu
and choose "scan for hardware changes" it should redetect the card and try
to find the software for it .. you may need the drivers again if they came
on a CD

while in 'system info'...my multi media does show that the drivers are not
installed...while I am not completely computer illiterate, how do i find out
the maker so i can go to website and download drivers?

After a clean operating system install (Windows), you need to install
the drivers for all your hardware. This includes your motherboard,
audio (which is why you have the problem), video, network, etc.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

i finally resolved this problem, found the manual and went to website and
the speakers sound great!
