View Full Version : Svchost.exe - NETWORK SERVICE

I'm wondering if anyone can help with my latest problem.

When XP starts I do not get the ZoneAlarm and Spybot TeaTimer icons in
the system tray and the system is running at 100%. I open Task Manager
and the task, svchost.exe (image name) NETWORK SERVICE (user name), is
running at 99% CPU. I end it and the CPU% drops to normal and the ZA
and TT icons appear in the system tray. There is another svchost.exe
NS item also running.

How can I stop the first svchost.exe item from starting. The system
runs fine after I've ended it.

Many thanks for any help.

I just did a tasklist /svc before and after ending the svchost.exe and
the line that disappeared is: svchost.exe 920 Dnscache. Hope this
helps with the solution.

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm
Also: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click/Expand the Svchost.exe process that you are interest in.
Then highlight one of the process listed under Svchost, right click and from
the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Some recent versions of Zone Alarm (not sure about the free version of ZA or
TeaTimer) may also cause issues.
If you leave the system along (don't manually kill a process) will it
eventually settle down?
