Windows Installer Service

I don't know why, what, who, where,etc., but all of a
sudden I can't access Word or Excel either one. When I
try either one I get the following,; 1. the windows
insatller pops up for about 3 full seconds, 2. then a box
pops up that says, "The windows installer service could
not be accessed. This could occur if you're running in
Safe Mode,(which I'm not!), or if the windows installer is
not properly installed. Contact your support personnel
for assistance.............
I'm running XP professional.
I have deleted nothing that in any way form or fashion
could have or had anything to do with windows components,
exe., appl, etc. etc.
I tried to download 2.0 installer form M.S.com last
evening. Waited an eternity for the download, only to be
told it was not for XP !!!!!!!!!!!
Other than reinstalling XP,(!!!!!), surely I can do
something else, right, RIGHT !?!?!?!?!?
A download site that can help me ??
Desperate and without access.....Need word for resume'
