View Full Version : XP Pro Suddenly Slow

I have been using XP Pro for about a year now, apply the latest patches when
they come out and haven't had any complaints. Today XP started running at
about 60% of what it ran at yesterday.
I clicked on defrag and it was OK. Then I clicked on Disc Cleanup which
started and then just sat there, it didn't lock up my machine, it just sat
there until I clicked the x to get out. I must have somehow changed a
setting. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try to fix my machine? I'm
stumped! Thanks.

Bobby;
Try this for Disk Clean-up:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812248
Or
Follow this link:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
For overall slowness of computer:
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

Just follow the first link from the "scholar" (Jupiter Jones) to the MS site
and follow the instructions there--in about 30 seconds you will be healed.
