help any changes I make to my desktop dissapear when I
log in.

it was working fine, but I had a crash of explorer and my
profile is now reset to the default and will not stay
changed.

What do you mean your profile was reset to the default? Did you get a
message about your regular account being in trouble? Some more words on
the screen about Windows logging you on with a temporary account? If
yes, that temporary account will not let itself be customized.

Corruption in the registry hive for the user account is usually the
cause for this series of events. You could nurse the damaged account
along and attempt repairs (system restore) but in all honesty, I've
found it more efficient (less time and effort), to write the account off
as "toast" and create a new account instead.

NOTE: May need to "take ownership" to gain access to some items moved
from the old account. Help and Support file has directions for doing
this.
