Install dell software on Inspiron

[Ghazal]

I got a new Dell Inspiron 6400 that came with an XP Home (no cds). I
burned a CD containing the 3 folders on my C drive that included the OS
and the drivers (i386+dell+drivers). Then I formatted the hard disk,
repartitioned, and installed an XP Pro that I had. I have installed the
drivers also. Where do I install the software that came with my laptop
(no application seems to run from the "dell" folder I burned onto the
CD)?

You will need original CDs for programs. The image files are useless
for this purpose.

Probably a stupid question after the fact but why didn't you just use
your XP Pro cd to upgrade the laptop from Home to Pro? There was no
need to format the hard drive and go through the hassles that ensued.

There is a service partition on that laptop, (or there should be),
consult the documentation that came with the laptop for instructions on
how to use it to restore Dell installed applications.

The 3rd-Party applications are embedded within the Recovery software
and aren't available as "Installable" programs. What you should have done
is burned the Recovery disk set (If available) and simply done a process
I call "De-Dell-ify" the PC by removing/uninstalling the unwanted code
from the Factory State/Delivered PC. Basically new Dells come with
McAfee Security Suite, several Dell Apps, Picture Control and a few
Media players. Most times a "De-Dell-ify" can be done in an hour or less.
Be sure to use AutoRuns to purge all the unnecessary Startups and
Watchdog apps Dells come loaded up with. Dimension desktop PCs
can come out of the box with 12-17 of the S&Ws running.

Not any more. The programs are COMPLETELY different than your statement!

Go to the Dell website and go to Support>Drivers & Downloads. From here put
in your service tag number. You can then select from a list of applications
& drivers to install. Although these should have also come with the
computer on a CD.

The main reason was that the existing partitions were in a very unsound
condition and I wanted to assign about 40G of free space on C: to other
partitions. My technician advised me to do as I did. Now all previous
settings (including the service partition probably) are gone and I
didn't make a Recovery Disk set before as R. McCarty said. The only
application that came with a CD is WordPerfect. Dell apps are on Dell's
drivers and downloads page, but no 3rd party software.

I see. If the laptop is brand new you might want to call Dell and
explain your situation, they might send you the cd's with the
applications. DON'T tell them you upgraded to XP Pro! They might say
that it's not supported and so on, that now the warranty is void! Just
make up a sob story saying that you lost everything on the laptop,
including service partition and that you can't get the laptop to work.
They might send you a recovery kit with Windows Home and all the
applications that came installed on the laptop.

Hi John

Thank you but I'm not in the US and no Dell service ... I switched to
my Nero and Norton apps!
