Home network XP-2000, IE says "Cannot find server"

Hi.
I have an XP box connected to the internet. Works 100%.
IP = IP 192.168.0.1
I have an win/2000 box connected to the XP with an Ethernet cable.
IP = 192.168.0.2
Both PCs can ping each other.
The XP is the default gateway of the Win/2000.
(See below output of ipconfig /all from both PCs)

Problem: I can't access the Internet from the Win/2000.
I get the "cannot find server" message.

Please note - the Win/2000 worked before in a different network, so
there might be some old definitions left (I removed proxy settings from
IE, I wonder if there's anything else left).
Please advice.

OK, not much information to go on, so I taking a guess here.

1st assumtion the the XP box has two ethernet cards installed in it. One for
the internet (gateway) and one for the internal network? If yes, continue.

The 1st computer the internet ethernet IP address is set to obtain. - Yes,
then continue.

The 1st computer second card is installed and you ran the shared internet
connection wizard and it set the second ethernet card to 192.168.0.1 /
255.255.255.0 - YES, then continue

This part is important. On the 1st computer go to Start > Run and type in
cmd and hit enter, this should give you a command window. Type IPCONFIG /all
and hit enter.

see waht the two IP addresses are for the two network cards. Some internet
providers have a DHCP internally and issue you an IP address for the internet
as 192.168.0.xxx, if this is the case see below in the WHAT IF section. If
not then take note of the DNS addresses and close the window.


Now to the second computer.

Check the IP address, by default, it should read as follows:

IP Address 192.168.0.2 (last number can be anything except 1, up to 254)
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1

DNS 192.168.0.1

If you have a firewall besure that the IP addresses are allowed 192.168.0.0
(this will be all 192.168.0.1 thru 192.168.0.254

Now to test

From the second computer go to Start > Run type cmd and hit enter

type in the commands below to see were it stops responding

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 4.2.2.2
ping yahoo.com


WHAT IF

If the Internet Address IS 192.168.0.1 then change the the internal network
numbers to 192.168.1.X, and the gateway on 2nd computer to 192.168.1.1

Get a NAT Router and forget about using your XP box as a gateway. You
shouldn't be connecting your computer directly to the Internet. Especially
when running such an insecure "operating system" as a Windoze box.

I copied the "ipconfig /all" output from both PCs.. You must have
missed it.
Anyway, it's SOLVED.
I copied the 2 DNSs from the XP to the Win/2000 and I'm happy.
