install freezes

Everytime I try to download/install the newest "critical
update" for XP it freezes at the initial install. It
downloads fine just won't install. It started with the
automatic update, then I went to the website and tried it
manually, same problem. Don't know if it's related but
Windows won't shut down completely now either. Goes
to "Windows shutting down" screen and freezes. HELP,
