I ran disk defragmenter on my computer, and several files
(all movies, I think, some about a gig and a half)were
unable to be defragmented. Why is that, and how can I
defragment them?

Data written to your hard drive is not always in one neat area. It's
actually scattered all over the hard drive. Defragmentation is the process
it putting those pieces (fragments) back together, changing "de fra g
men t ed" to "defragmented".

Oops At any rate, files in use will not be defragmented nor will large
files if 15% or more free disk space is not available. It also could simply
be a limitation of the defrag utility. I wouldn't worry about it.
