Greetings.Hope someone can help. The problem: Win.XP.Kid
was trying to download some pictures from somewhere to
put on desktop, I was told NAV kept "popping up."
Computer then froze, and could not be shut down, either
soft or hard. Left it overnight and was able to do a hard
turn off. Now, when I attempt to boot up, it gives a
message (after succesful post) "disk error, press
cntl+alt+del to re-start." I do this and after about 30
seconds of blank screen the same message returns. This
just keeps looping as long as I keep entering cntl......
I then booted successfully to the XP disk, and after some
initial disk evaluation (or whatever it does) following
selecting the install win. option, (only other option
offered was the restore console) it gave the message that
there was no partition, and/or that the file system was
not recognizable to Win., and it listed several possible
causes, including 3rd party partition software (don't
have), hard disk problems, and a virus. The hard
disk "sounds" ok, no unusual noise. I then rebooted to
the XP cd again and chose the restore console option,
which "loaded" successfully, however there are many
commands and my fantasy of one of them being "repair
windows" was not realized. The questions: What is going
on? If the install program does not see a partition, is
there any value to attempt to repair with the console? If
so, can anyone tell me the commands to execute to repair,
or point me to a resource that explains what the commands
do and which I should use? If possible, I would like to
get the computer to the point where I could rescue some
picture files ( I know, should have backed-up). Sorry for
the long post. Thanks for the help!
