My Sony DVD ROM U1613A died and a direct replacement is unavailable,
the later replacement U1615A did not recognize DVDs burnt using the
Sony DVD RW DW-U18A though it read commercial DVDs OK. I had to try
many brands of drives till I found one that would read DVDs burnt using
the DW-U18A.
Is this usual? These DVDs ran fine in a DVD player and many of my
friends DVD ROM drives. Does this mean that one has to replace drives
in pairs in order to ensure compatibility?

I don't know about "usual", but it does happen for several reasons.
Generally, the burning drive had a problem that allowed it to function, but
in a manner not compatable with orher drives.
The same thing used to occasionally happen with floppy drives.
