View Full Version : Windows Messenger Disconnecting Constantly

I have 4 computers on my home network - 1 wired and 3 wireless. All connect
to the internet easily and without problem. All are Windows XP Home with
Windows messenger, configured the same. I use the router's firewall (D-link)
and Windows Firewall. Messenger works fine on all the computers except that
on one of the wireless, it disconnects by itself after a little while all the
time. It reconnects fine manually if I direct it to. I've looked thru help
files and tips - I tried taking it out of and re-adding it to the exceptions
in Windows Firewall, nothing. I have no other software firewalls. The
communication link with that computer seems to work fine, although it is the
farthest one from the router. That one is an 80211.b. Any other ideas I can
try? It's quite annoying.
Thanks,
Russ

Greetings Russ,
You could try updating the firmware for the router as a number of router manufacturers have
made fixes to fix problems like this.
Also because a few years ago this was a rather significant problem, the Messenger protocol
was changed to eliminate this problem. Unfortunately Windows messenger is no longer being
developed so all these changes have been added to MSN Messenger, now Windows Live Messenger.
As such, the clients experiencing the problem may just want to use Windows Live Messenger
instead (http://get.live.com/messenger/overview).

Kay,
The router might be the problem, but it isn't. Too many ppl are reporting
this problem and they haven't all got D-link routers, nor have they recently
changed anything. It affects versions of Win Msgr that are new enough that it
isn't supposed to affect them, so that leaves you guys. Now if Win Msgr WILL
no longer work with the network, then for chrissake SAY SO.
