Hi, I have new pc athlon 2400+, was ok for 2 weeks, i had
a Geforce 128mb 8X vidcard installed yesterday, playing
Quake last night and heard an alarm!! I shut down,
restarted, played again and alarm again. I restarted and
didnt use the game, stayed online surfing for a while and
alarm didnt go off again. Is something overheating? The
top of my box was hot to touch, right above the power
supply. Ive been trying to find a system temperature
gauge but cant, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Many new BIOS routines monitor CPU fan speed and temperature. Boot the
system and select the BIOS setup and then find the CPU fan speed and
temperature displays and watch them for a while. If the fan speed goes
to zero and the temperature starts ramping up, then you have a defective
CPU fan. If the CPU still gets too hot, then your overclocking may be at
fault or you have blocked air passages inside your case.

You can watch your power supply fan from the back of your unit. Hold
your hand in front of the vent to discover whether the fan is running.

You can also try running with the case open if you can't isolate a
defective fan. If the alarms stop, then try re-arranging your ribbon
cables to improve air flow.

Oh, your new video card may also have a fan that needs checking. When
you installed it, you may have accidentally jammed the fan or the card
is too close to another card. If the video card is AGP, then move the
adjacent PCI card to another slot. All these fans are your lowest
reliability factor devices. Too bad vendors can't spend another $1.05 to
buy better fans.
