limiting number of windows

how do i prevent each new page I bring up in the browser
creating its own window, instead of replacing the last
page in the preexisting window. thanks

In Internet Explorer

Click Tools
Click Internet Options
Click Advanced tab
Check Reuse windows for launching shortcuts
