why does the automatic updater need access to the internet
AFTER it has downloaded updates and is about to install them?

Hi,
The automatic updater checks with the web stie to see if
it is the latest update and has the authentic signature.
If you had downloaded it the previous day etc and so it
must verify if that is the latest patch as by MS.

The automatic updater will check with for new updates even if you have
downloaded the updates and not installed them. Sometimes there can be a
patch for a patch that didnt work so well.
Each file / update that gets downloaded from microsoft will always contain
an encrypted signiture / certificate that can be compared with the microsoft
server to show that it is genuine for security purposes. To make the
comparison it has to have a connection to the server. In this case, it uses
the internet.

so if the updater downloads the updates, and is ready to
install them, and i deny the updater access to the
internet, will that affect the update process?
