Very OT not doubt but done care -
I was shown, about two weeks ago a full page advertisement taken out by Mc
Afee in the UK's Financial Times.
It pointed out that serious threats to security exist because of inherent
weaknesses in MS operating systems. [we all know that]
It also said that users will therefore want to look beyond MS for security.
This resulted from Mc Afee and Symantec accusing MS of endangering consumers
who will be using the new vista OS.
Mc Afee and Symantec have apparently been 'shut out' of collaborating with
MS, who have denied both companies access to key computer codes in vista, so
that their products would be more effective in vista. [and give the consumer
choice]
It would appear that MS may force users of vista to rely on their own
products such as One Care & Defender.
Seeing that the average computer owner, buying from the large OEMs, have and
will no doubt be the main users of McAfee and Symantec products[despite what
is thought about either's products in these newsgroups], would cause some
considerable loss in sales for both companies.
What other main AV companies may also be shut-out I have not heard.
This action by MS will no doubt leave users of vista more vulnerable to new
threats. McA has already stated that by locking out the 'good guys', will
only let in the bad, and that criminals have already cracked vista's kernel.
I then thought that sounds like restrictive practice and that no doubt the
European Anti-trust will soon be on MS's backs with more big fines.
Apparently the EU has warned MS of various breaches of competition law, and
now MS has announced that they are making significant changes to
'accommodate' EU law with regard to search tools and security.
Sometimes you have got to just love our EU.
I wonder if MS will make similar concessions to the rest of the world, or
make users of vista use their own AV etc.

CLIPPED

Thank you Anando - that does broaden the discussion re the threat of MS
getting a strangle-hold on the PC users of the future.
I hope that vista does fall under intense scrutiny. I like to have the
freedom of choice. And if the changes are not enough then MS deserve a
'bloody nose' again.
But as the writer says 'Only time can tell'
