View Full Version : windows explorer frequently terminates

I have had Windows Explorer unexpectedly terminate several times a day for
some time (a window pops up and says Explorer has encountered a problem and
must terminate). It often happens when I am doing something else and the
explorer window is just sitting there in the background. I frequently have
it looking at another computer on my home network. Does anyone have any
idea of what might be going on or how I could find out?

Thanks for any help,

Huck

I'm sorry, but you haven't given us enough information to get focused
help. Look in Event Viewer for clues:

Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

You mentioned that the problem is with "Windows Explorer" but later say
that it happens and "the explorer window is just sitting there in the
background". Explorer.exe is the Windows graphical user interface so it
is *always* "sitting there in the background" unless you are working
strictly from Safe Mode Command Line. Perhaps you really mean Internet
Explorer which is the Internet browser that comes built into Windows?

Post back with more details after you have looked at Event Viewer. Here
is a link that will help you craft your next newsgroup post:

In the meantime, also consider:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:
