windows xp downloads & updates. email questions

When I go to download windows xp updates my computer says
that I do have a correct or up to date xp and it refuses
to download the updates.

Also, when I am reading my e-mail and have an attachment
or I want to go to another site that an e=mail friend has
sent to me--my computer goes out of of the net and back
to my screen saver startup.

What can I do. I have a Reg. number for my xp. Will that
help.

and Select O for Outlook
